Happy Valley's public schools run through the North Clackamas School District, Oregon's fifth-largest, and most of the city feeds a single high school system anchored by Adrienne C. Nelson High School. If you are house hunting here, the practical question is rarely "are the schools good" and almost always "which schools does this address feed." Here is how the feeder system works, school by school, and where the boundaries get complicated.

How the feeder system works

Like most Oregon districts, North Clackamas assigns students by geography: an elementary school feeds a middle school, which feeds a high school. Most of Happy Valley sits in the Adrienne C. Nelson feeder system, the newest of the district's high school attendance areas. That single fact shapes a lot of home searches: a buyer who wants the Nelson path can find it across a wide swath of the city, while a buyer who assumes every address in Happy Valley is the same will miss that some pockets answer to different districts entirely.

The high school: Adrienne C. Nelson

Adrienne C. Nelson High School opened on September 7, 2021, at 14897 SE Parklane Drive, built on the site of the former Rock Creek Middle School. It is the district's newest high school and the one most Happy Valley families are zoned for. Named for the first Black woman to serve on the Oregon Supreme Court, the school was built to relieve crowding in the district's other high schools and to give the east side of Clackamas County a modern campus of its own.

The middle and elementary schools

The district's middle school in the city is Happy Valley Middle School at 13865 SE King Road. On the elementary side, the schools serving Happy Valley addresses include Beatrice Morrow Cannady Elementary, Happy Valley Elementary, Scouters Mountain Elementary, Verne A. Duncan Elementary, and, in parts of the district's footprint, Mount Scott Elementary. Cannady Elementary is the district's newest in the area: boundary changes were approved in June 2018 to balance enrollment ahead of its opening, with the new feeder patterns fully in place by September 2021.

Not every address feeds the same schools

Here is the part that surprises people: portions of Happy Valley fall outside the North Clackamas district entirely, in the Gresham-Barlow and Centennial school districts. Even inside North Clackamas, the assigned elementary, middle, and high school can differ from one street to the next, especially along the city's edges. The district publishes a School Locator tool on its website where you can confirm the exact assignments for a specific address, and that is always the first step we take when a buyer tells us schools are a priority. For families considering private options, the city also lists La Salle High School, a private Catholic school nearby, though it is not part of the public district.

Why it matters when you buy

School assignment is one of the most common questions we get on tours, and it is genuinely address-specific in Happy Valley. The good news is the system is stable and the newest campus is excellent, so most searches resolve quickly once the address is checked. When you tour with us, we run the school lookups before you ever write an offer, so there are no surprises at the kitchen table in August.
